Explore Carboneras…
67 km from the city of Almeria we find the town of Carboneras like an oasis behind the palm trees. Its past as a discreet fishing village has given rise to one of the most valued areas in the coast of Almeria, as it has all the ingredients that any tourist or resident would desire: quality gastronomy and spectacular beaches in a privileged environment: the natural park of Cabo de Gata.
In its streets we can feel the heat and vivacity of tourism in summer, as well as peace and tranquility in winter. There is a lot to visit, and many places to discover; We recommend walking along the enormous seafront that bathes the entire town from Los Cocones beach. On our way we will come across the Andalusian Park, located between the promenade and the castle of San Andres, whose trees it is always pleasant to get lost through. There is an amphitheater inside the park where concerts and shows are usually held on the occasion of local festivals. Also in the Andalusian Park we can see the House of Music an old 19th century manor house now converted into a theater and music conservatory.
It is also remarkable the Casa de los Fuentes, the current Town Hall of Carboneras after a good reform. Next to it, we find a beautiful viewpoint towards the coast, called Solarium.
Sorbas street is the main artery of the town and where most of the shops and stores are located, ideal for shopping. Thursday is also the day when the weekly street market is set up in the parking area where you will find a large number of products of all kinds. But you certainly can’t miss:
San Andres Castle
Beaches in Carboneras
Undoubtedly the biggest attraction in Carboneras and it is not surprising, since the award-winning Los Muertos beach is a 7-minute drive away. In high season you also have a bus line with different schedules from Carboneras, a good option since the parking lot usually fills up early.
But the truth is that, apart from this, Carboneras has many other magnificent and wide beaches to enjoy, all of them with crystal clear waters. Within its urban nucleus we find Las Marinicas beach, that extends from the thermal power plant to the port, with almost 1.5 km in length and serene waters. From the fishing port to La Puntica, which is the ledge located opposite to the Island of San Andres, we find Los Cocones and Los Barquicos beach, two sandy beaches ideal for visiting with the family. From la Puntica to the end of the town stretches the huge Lancon beach (or Ancón), sandy with some rock on the shore, and a beautiful seabed for snorkelling.
Outside the town, to the north, taking a dirt road towards the Torre del Rayo, we can visit La Galera cove, an absolutely beautiful and spectacular rocky cove with easy access. Next to it, the Algarrobico beach is another huge and spectacular sandy beach worth both for bathing and for a walk. On the other side, about three kilometers south of Carboneras and very close to Los Muertos beach, is El Corral cove, with coarse gravel sand, turquoise waters and parking right next to the beach.
Mesa Roldan Lighthouse and tower
After Los Muertos beach to the south, in the heart of the Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park, rises a spectacular cliff, the highest in Almeria, crowned by a plain called Mesa Roldan, here the Mesa Roldan lighthouse was built in 1863. It is a slender white tower, octagonal in shape and 12 meters high.
Next to the lighthouse, we find the Mesa Roldan tower, the only vestige of the castle built in the 18th century to perform a defensive function. The panoramic views of the Almeria coastline from this location are absolutely incredible, so you cannot leave Carboneras without visiting this place.
Vela Latina Windmill
Cultural visits that can be made in Carboneras include a windmill converted into an interpretation center. It is listed as an Asset of Cultural Interest and is the only mill left in the eastern part of Almeria.
Torre del Rayo
This cylindrical watchtower built in masonry is located at Punta del Rayo, above La Galera cove. It has been declared a Monument of Cultural Interest and restored, so you can access its interior and enjoy the views it offers from the top of the tower, though, climbing up its steep staircase is only suitable for adventurers who do not suffer from vertigo.
Viewpoint Punta de los Muertos
Panoramic lovers should not miss a visit to this viewpoint from which you get a beautiful image of the sea, the mountains, the beach and the cliffs. Without a doubt, it sums up a large part of what the Gata-Nijar Natural Park is.
The viewpoint is between las Salinicas beach and los Muertos beach, next to the car park, so it is very easy to access and an ideal visit to do on the day you do the excursion to this beautiful beach with turquoise waters.
San Andres Castle
We have to go back to the year 1559 when King Felipe II ceded the municipality as a lordship to the Marquis del Carpio. In those years, the Almeria coast was the preferred gateway for the Barbary pirates in their raids. For this reason, the Marquis del Carpio built the castle of San Andres to defend the area precisely against the Berber attacks and the Moorish uprising. In 2013 the restoration work was completed and today it is used as a cultural center that offers different exhibitions. It can be visited every day, in the morning and afternoon. |
